Bone Density Test (BMD / DEXA Scan)

A Bone Density Test, also called a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Test or DEXA scan, is a quick and painless way to check how strong your bones are. It helps doctors detect weak bones, low bone density, and osteoporosis.

A simple scan gives your doctor useful bone health information.

What is a Bone Density Test?

This test measures minerals in your bones to show how strong they are. It uses a very small amount of X-ray and does not require injections, medicines, or anaesthesia.

Why Doctors Recommend Bone Density Scans

Doctors may suggest this test after a fracture, menopause, long-term steroid use, or if there is a family history of weak bones. It helps to:

  • Check for osteoporosis or low bone density
  • Understand fracture risk
  • Provide a baseline before treatment
  • Compare with older bone-density reports
